An agreement has been reached between Disney, Lucasfilm and former Mandalorian actress Gina Carano, officially ending her wrongful termination lawsuit filed in 2024.
The lawsuit stemmed from Carano’s 2021 firing from the Star Wars series following a social media post that ignited widespread online controversy.
A Lucasfilm spokesperson confirmed the resolution in a statement to Variety, saying, “The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies.”
“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.”
The statement continued by saying, “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
The settlement concludes a high-profile dispute that attracted national and international attention.
The case centered on questions of free speech, political expression, and whether statements made on personal social media accounts could be grounds for termination in the entertainment industry.
Carano also released her own statement announcing the settlement, saying, “I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved.”
“I hope this brings some healing to the force. I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit.”
She added, “Thank you Mr. Musk and X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return. To my lawyers at Schaerr|Jaffe who walked me through this unknown territory, thank you for your wisdom and guidance.”
She continued, “I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome. I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive.”
“I hope to make you proud. I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me. Yes, I’m smiling.”
Carano portrayed the character Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, appearing in multiple episodes and becoming a fan favorite among Star Wars viewers.
Prior to her dismissal, Lucasfilm had reportedly considered developing a spinoff project for her character.
The Post Millennial (TPM) reported at the time that her firing in February 2021 followed a social media post that was criticized by some online users.
In 2024, Carano provided her first detailed public defense of the post and her other statements.
She said, “Look with your own eyes at what I posted and ask yourself, for example, where did I compare Republicans to the Jewish people in the holocaust. I didn’t. Ask yourself why they were calling me a racist, was there any merit behind that or history of it whatsoever? No. Look at why I was called a transphobe—for making droid noises from Star Wars? ‘Beep, bop, boop’ was obviously directed to the online bullies and did not in any way denigrate transgender people.”
Carano also addressed her public questioning of pandemic-related measures, stating, “Were my questions about masks, lockdowns & forced vaccines ok to ask & push the subject into the light?”
“Should we have been allowed to publicly discuss those topics at that time without being harassed or censored? Absolutely.”
TPM noted that her lawsuit alleged that Disney and Lucasfilm engaged in wrongful termination by dismissing her for expressing personal political and social views.
The complaint claimed her firing was politically motivated and that she was treated differently than other performers who made public statements.
One of the most notable elements of the case was Elon Musk’s involvement.
