The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly taken interest in remarks from a Democratic state legislator who disclosed details about active ICE operations. Officials indicated that the possibility of pursuing obstruction-of-justice charges may be evaluated. This follows Arizona State Senator Analise Ortiz’s admission on social media that she had informed residents about ICE activity taking place in their area. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that such alerts place illegal offenders above American citizens, undermining both national security and the work of law enforcement agencies.
The possibility of charges was raised in response to a Fox News inquiry, with McLaughlin noting that assaults on ICE and immigration enforcement agents had increased by more than 800 percent in a single year. ICE officers, she said, regularly engage in operations aimed at arresting violent criminal illegal aliens, and political rhetoric against these agencies was being linked to a rise in such assaults.
Ortiz confirmed that she had issued such alerts, stating that she would continue to do so when ICE was present in the community. Additional comments indicated that she viewed the alerts as a means of keeping residents safe from what she described as unconstitutional actions.
Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen responded by stating that public officials have a duty to respect the law and those who enforce it, announcing that the matter had been referred to the U.S. Attorney for review due to possible violations of federal law.
The controversy arose shortly after DHS carried out Operation Trojan Horse in Los Angeles, targeting areas identified by officials as having significant MS-13 gang influence. The enforcement action began near a Home Depot in MacArthur Park, where agents were seen emerging from a moving truck and approaching individuals gathered nearby.
Sixteen individuals from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua were taken into custody. DHS described the area as one affected by gang-related crime but did not immediately release further information regarding the detainees’ criminal records or immigration status.
