During the same exchange, IIlhan Omar defended Omar Fateh’s proposals to cut off all cooperation between Minneapolis police and ICE. Additionally, she accused the GOP of protecting human traffickers. Earlier that week, the congresswoman posted to X:

“The pedophile protection party is shutting down Congress just to avoid voting on the release of the Epstein files.”

These statements further underscore Ilhan Omar’s open-border policies and her ongoing attacks on immigration enforcement. The Trump White House addressed this issue directly in an April 28, 2025 memo, stating that “illegal border crossings included unaccompanied minors—many of whom were victims of trafficking.”

It’s important to clarify: Omar Fateh is a Minnesota state senator and current DFL-endorsed candidate for Mayor of Minneapolis—not to be confused with Rep. Ilhan Omar. Like Omar, he is Somali, Muslim, and a vocal advocate for banning ICE cooperation with local police. Also, Rep. Ilhan Omar has endorsed Omar Fateh.

Islamic Socialist Candidates Support Ilhan Omar’s Open-Border and Anti-ICE Policies

A self-declared democratic socialist, Fateh is aligned with the Minnesota Democratic‑Farmer‑Labor (DFL) Party. He is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and has earned comparisons to Zohran Mamdani in NYC as another Muslim member of the rising youth‑led progressive left. In the Minnesota legislature, Fateh has focused on a number of far-left policy priorities:

• Championed free public college tuition for families earning under $80,000
• Advocated for minimum wage increases for ride‑share drivers such as Uber and Lyft
• Authored legislation to expand access to fentanyl test strips as part of a broader harm-reduction approach

Fateh has pledged to sever all ties between Minneapolis police and federal immigration enforcement. In a July 2025 X thread, he declared:

“There is no circumstance in which MPD (Minneapolis Police Department)  should cooperate with ICE,” adding that he would “halt participation in Federal Task Forces that include ICE.”

Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist running for mayor in New York City, has attacked ICE for what he calls  “breaking up families and spreading fear.” Mamdani has made abolishing ICE a central theme of his campaign, and he was even caught on camera trying to physically assault Trump Border Czar Tom Homan.

In July, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top Democrats issued a joint statement condemning criticism of Omar as “unhinged, racist and Islamophobic.” They demanded an apology and framed her as a victim of bigotry.

Omar is not only a member of Congress, but she is also Deputy Chair of the Progressive Caucus. The Progressive Caucus is one of the most influential blocs in the House Democrat Caucus. Her radical stance on immigration has moved from the margins of her party to the center of its agenda.
