President Donald J. Trump suggested that it might be time for federal law enforcement to assist Texas in locating Democrats who fled the state to sabotage a special legislative session.
Dozens of fugitive state lawmakers bolted in an effort to thwart redrawing of gerrymandered congressional districts, a move backed by national Democrats who see it as a threat to their ability to cheat in elections, putting their dream of retaking the House of Representatives next year in peril.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded by authorizing warrants for their arrest and return to Austin, and on Tuesday, Trump commented on the issue when he was asked by a reporter about whether he thought that the FBI should get involved in rounding up the varmints.
BREAKING: President Trump says the FBI may get involved to help bring Democrats back to Texas
“They’ve ABANDONED the state!”
“[FBI] may have to [get involved]. I know they want them back. Not only the Attorney General, but the Governor wants them back.”

“Do you want the federal government and the FBI to help locate and arrest these Texas Democrats who have left the state?” The reporter asked the president.
“Well, I think they’ve abandoned the state,” Trump said. “Nobody’s seen anything like it, even though they’ve done it twice before. And, in a certain way, it almost looks like they’ve abandoned the state. Looks very bad.”
Pressed on whether that means the FBI should join the effort, Trump seemed to open the door to federal involvement.
“Well, they may have to, they may have to,” he responded. “No, I know they want them back. Not only the attorney general, the governor wants them back. If you look, I mean, the governor of Texas is demanding they come back. So, a lot of people are demanding they come back. You can’t just sit it out. You have to go back. You have to fight it out. That’s what elections are all about.”
Trump’s remarks come after Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn sent a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel encouraging the feds to help “locate or arrest” the AWOL Democrats, also to investigate whether criminal acts, including bribery, were committed.
I have asked @FBIDirectorKash to work with @GregAbbott_TX & Texas law enforcement to investigate potential CRIMINAL acts, including bribery, and to hold legislators accountable who have fled the state in a shameful attempt to stall the legislative process in the Texas House.…

“I request the FBI’s assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law,” Cornyn wrote in his letter.
“The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime,” the senator added. “Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses,” he wrote.
“Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty and are holding flood relief and property tax cuts hostage,” Gov. Abbott said in a Monday post to X. “I ordered Texas DPS to arrest and return every derelict House Democrat to the Texas Capitol.”

The pressure may be working because two wayward Democrats have reportedly returned to Austin.
While the stated tally was 94, the vote sheet shows 95 plus Ken King whose machine didn’t register him present even though he was in the chamber. So that puts it at 96, 4 from a quorum.

Abbott has now considerably upped the ante, moving to remove the derelict Democrats from office.

“Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty to Texans, and there must be consequences,” the governor said in a statement. Now it appears as though he’s going to follow through on delivering those consequences.
