The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention capacity by 1,000 beds at the Miami Correctional Facility, according to a press release. This new detention center, dubbed the “Speedway Slammer,” is set to house some of the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens arrested by ICE. The expansion is part of a broader effort funded by the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which fully financed the 287(g) program and secured funding for an additional 80,000 ICE detention beds nationwide.
Secretary Kristi Noem highlighted the partnership and the new detention facility, emphasizing its role in helping remove “the worst of the worst” criminals from the country. She acknowledged Indiana Governor Mike Braun’s cooperation and urged those unlawfully present in the United States to avoid arrest by self-deporting through the CBP Home App.
“COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer. Today, we’re announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds,” said Noem. “Thanks to Governor Braun for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer. Avoid arrest and self deport now using the CBP Home App.”
Governor Braun expressed pride in working with DHS under this innovative partnership, portraying Indiana as taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration and aiming to lead among states in this effort.
“We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they remove the worst of the worst with this innovative partnership,” said Braun. “Indiana is taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration and will continue to lead the way among states.”
This announcement follows the precedent of the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility opened in Florida, noted for its remote and secure location. The “Speedway Slammer” aims to similarly serve as a high-security facility for ICE detainees in the Midwest region. This development underscores ongoing federal and state collaborations to expand immigration detention capacity to manage growing populations of detained high risk criminal illegal immigrants.
