Five soldiers were shot and wounded Wednesday at the Fort Stewart Army base in Georgia. A suspect – reportedly a fellow service member – was quickly apprehended, and a lockdown of the base was lifted.
The shooting is under investigation by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
Citing a U.S. official and the military base, ABC News reported that the shooter was a male soldier at Fort Stewart, about 40 miles outside Savannah, Georgia. CNN identified him as an Army sergeant.
He was apprehended a little after 11:30 a.m, about half an hour after the base and several nearby public schools went on lockdown, according to Fort Stewart.
In a Facebook post, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield said there is “no active threat to the community” and first responders were helping the wounded soldiers.
The five wounded soldiers were initially treated at a base hospital, but local media reported that some were taken to a level one trauma center in Savannah. No fatalities have been reported
FBI coordinating with Army
The FBI’s Atlanta office told CBS News that it is coordinating with the Army regarding the incident. The Georgia State Patrol also confirmed it was treating the area as an “active scene.”
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a social media post that he is “saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart.”
“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he wrote.
White House response
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavittt posted on X that President Trump has been “briefed on the shooting” and that they are “monitoring the situation.”
Also on social media, Attorney General Pam Bondi said federal agents in Georgia were “coordinating to provide support as the situation at Fort Stewart develops.”
“I am praying for all the victims and for our troops at the base,” Bondi wrote.
Background on Fort Stewart
