Federal prosecutors are investigating Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., for alleged mortgage fraud, following a criminal referral from a federal housing agencys earlier this year. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland is leading the probe into Schiff’s real estate dealings, according to an anonymous Trump administration source who spoke to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Tuesday.
SAN has reached out to Sen. Schiff’s office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland to confirm the investigation. The Department of Justice press office responded to a Straight Arrow News inquiry with, “No comment.” We are still waiting to hear back from Schiff’s office.
The inquiry stems from accusations that Schiff may have falsified property records tied to his Maryland home.
Criminal referral accusations
Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. It outlines what the agency says are “multiple instances” where Schiff misrepresented his primary residence to secure more favorable loan terms.
“Mr. Schiff appears to have falsified records in order to receive favorable loan terms, and also appears to have been aware of the financial benefits of a primary residence mortgage when compared to a secondary residence mortgage,” Pulte wrote.
According to a 2023 CNN article, a spokesperson for the senator said that he listed both the California and Maryland homes as primary residences because they used them year-round, not as vacation homes.
Between 2003 and 2019, Schiff allegedly submitted filings designating his Potomac, Maryland, home as his primary residence. However, during the same period, he was also claiming a tax exemption on a condo in Burbank, California, which he also listed as his primary residence. Schiff represented California’s 27th, 28th and 30th congressional districts over this time period.
The FHFA director wrote that Schiff could be in violation of federal laws related to wire fraud, bank fraud and making false statements to financial institutions.
Schiff denies wrongdoing
Schiff denied doing anything wrong and suggested the investigation is politically motivated.
“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason,” Schiff wrote on X. “So in a way, I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot.”
