A grand jury has reportedly been convened under the direction of Attorney General Pam Bondi to examine allegations of a criminal conspiracy linked to the 2016 ‘Russiagate’ probe involving former President Donald Trump’s campaign and early administration. This development follows criminal referrals submitted by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

These referrals, based on recently declassified documents, are said to suggest that officials from former President Barack Obama’s administration may have played a role in advancing what has been described as a politically motivated narrative connecting Trump’s campaign to Russian interference efforts. The origins of that narrative have been widely attributed to the campaign of 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Citing internal Justice Department contacts and official directives signed by Attorney General Bondi, Fox News was the first to report on this action. During a Monday broadcast, Fox News correspondent David Spunt stated that an unnamed federal prosecutor was instructed to present the evidence to a grand jury via a one-page document signed by Bondi. According to a person familiar with the issue, the verdict was based on Bondi’s expressed belief that the contents of the referral were a clear cause for deep concern and justified initiating further legal proceedings.

The process remains in its early stages. As of now, no indictments or charges have been filed. The convening of the grand jury represents an initial step toward evaluating whether sufficient evidence exists to pursue criminal indictments. Broadcaster Megyn Kelly, citing previously reported links between the Clinton campaign and the now-discredited Steele Dossier, has expressed the belief that the recently declassified materials support claims of coordinated efforts to discredit Trump. According to Kelly, the dossier, comprised of unverified allegations, including claims of Trump’s supposed ties to the Russian government, was allegedly developed as a means of redirecting public scrutiny away from Clinton’s separate email controversy.
