Deep blue states New York and California intend to follow through on redistricting plans.
It is believed that the move is influenced by dozens of state lawmakers in Texas who reportedly fled in order to sabotage the redistricting plans of the Republican Party. Some of these Democrats went to New York, where they stood alongside Governor Kathy Hochul as she vowed to explore “every option” on gerrymandering her state’s districts.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also indicated that there are plans in his state to “put mid-decade redistricting before voters,” according to The Hill.
“We’re going to fight fire with fire,” Newsom vowed. “We also will punch above our weight in terms of the impact of what we’re doing, and I think that should be absorbed by those in the Texas delegation. Whatever they are doing will be neutered here in the state of California.”
“It’s cause and effect, triggered on the basis of what occurs or doesn’t occur in Texas,” he added
While this sounds like a boon for Democrats in those states, it is unlikely that the districts will be ready in time for the 2026 midterms, as the left tries to claw back power from the majority party.
Loyola Marymount University law professor Justin Levitt, who also founded the ‘All About Redistricting’ database, reacted to the bold and brash move from Texas Dems.
“What Texas has done now is that: If you drive the car all the way off the cliff, there’s no road. And I don’t know if they realize exactly how far they may have pushed some other actors around the country,” he said.
Plans to redistrict in Texas have been supported by President Donald Trump and could give Republicans additional seats, which is likely why Democrats chose to leave the state and “[deprive] the chamber of the numbers it needs to function.”
It is also causing a temporary pause in Texas House business and likely will not have any significant or permanent impact on redistricting plans in the state. “As a result, Democrats are eyeing opportunities to cancel out would-be Republican gains in the Lone Star State by redistricting to their benefit elsewhere,” The Hill reported.
As BizPac Review previously reported, Trump has already implied that the FBI may have to wrangle up the Democrats who “abandoned” Texas.
“Well, I think they’ve abandoned the state,” Trump said, reacting to a reporter’s question on whether he would like to see the federal government get involved. “Nobody’s seen anything like it, even though they’ve done it twice before. And, in a certain way, it almost looks like they’ve abandoned the state. Looks very bad.”
When further asked if this means the FBI should step in, Trump didn’t shy away from the possibility.
“Well, they may have to, they may have to. No, I know they want them back. Not only the attorney general, the governor wants them back. If you look, I mean, the governor of Texas is demanding they come back. So, a lot of people are demanding they come back. You can’t just sit it out. You have to go back. You have to fight it out. That’s what elections are all about.”
