HOUSTON, TX – A 21-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder following a deadly crash that began as a police chase in the early hours of Monday morning. The incident took place near Midtown, at the intersection of Smith Street and Elgin.
Rene Hernandez is accused of leading a Precinct 7 deputy on a high-speed chase before crashing into multiple vehicles. The pursuit ended when Hernandez allegedly ran a red light and collided with a white Lexus, resulting in a fiery wreck that claimed the lives of both occupants inside the Lexus.
Witnesses described the crash as resembling a bomb explosion, shaking nearby buildings. Video footage obtained from the scene shows the intense blaze that erupted upon impact. The deputy reportedly observed Hernandez’s Ford F-150 striking two vehicles in a Wells Fargo parking lot before attempting to pull him over.
Investigators revealed that Hernandez fled the scene at high speed, ignoring several red lights. The collision at Smith and Elgin was so severe that the Lexus spun out, hit a building, and caught fire, leaving the two victims dead at the scene.
Authorities noted that Hernandez showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and the smell of alcohol. He is currently undergoing evaluation for driving while intoxicated, in addition to facing murder charges.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is actively pursuing these charges, emphasizing the seriousness of committing a felony that results in death. If convicted, Hernandez faces serious legal consequences.
A passenger in Hernandez’s vehicle was treated for injuries but has not been charged. However, police have indicated that this could change as the investigation unfolds.
Questions remain regarding the chase policy of Precinct 7 and whether the deputy involved will remain on active duty. Efforts to obtain further information from the precinct have yet to yield a response.
