A Missouri man is behind bars after allegedly punching a teenage boy so violently that it triggered a seizure—then continuing to hit the teen as he convulsed on the ground.
According to police, 41-year-old Matthew Proctor was arrested and charged with child abuse following the disturbing incident outside a Kansas City home on the morning of July 30. Authorities say Proctor showed up angry after someone reportedly “answered the phone disrespectfully,” and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Witnesses told officers that Proctor arrived at the house where his kids were staying and demanded to see them. A 15-year-old boy—believed to be Proctor’s son—came outside and confronted him. That’s when Proctor allegedly snapped.
According to a probable cause statement, Proctor punched the teen in the face three times with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground. As the boy began seizing, Proctor allegedly struck him two more times in the face.
Several children and witnesses at the scene gave matching accounts of the attack. One person even described someone screaming “bloody murder” as the violence unfolded.
The family had reportedly planned to visit Worlds of Fun amusement park that day. But a heated phone call between Proctor and one of his kids allegedly prompted his surprise visit—and threats of violence.
One witness said Proctor had previously “punched the air” out of his child’s lungs during another altercation. Another child reportedly went silent after learning Proctor was on the way, fearing what might happen.
During the attack, Proctor’s oldest daughter reportedly tried to intervene, hitting him in the back. He then allegedly grabbed his youngest son and fled the scene.
When police arrived, the 15-year-old was being helped into an ambulance. He had swelling and red marks on his face, visible injuries to both sides of his jaw, and a diagnosed concussion. He was taken to a local children’s hospital for treatment.
Proctor was arrested about 35 minutes later at another location. He told officers he was actually the one attacked first—claiming he’d been punched in the mouth and only hit the teen once in self-defense.
But a neighbor’s Ring camera reportedly captured the truth. The footage allegedly showed Proctor striking the teen multiple times, including once while he was already on the ground. At no point in the video did the teen appear to hit Proctor, according to investigators.
When told about the video, Proctor reportedly said, “How do I know?” when asked if it would support his version of events.
Proctor is currently being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $75,000 bond. Police say he poses an ongoing threat to the victim. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 6.
