Two Afghan asylum seekers have been charged over the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl, an incident that has left a small Midlands town in shock, the Mail on Sunday can reveal.
Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, has been charged with the rape of a minor in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
A second man, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, has been charged with aiding and abetting the rape, as well as strangling and abducting the girl, who is now receiving specialist care.
Despite the intense public interest the case has generated in Nuneaton, sources told the Mail on Sunday that Warwickshire Police have advised councillors and local officials not to reveal the two suspects’ asylum-seeker status, citing fears of “stoking community tensions.”
A local resident who contacted us accused the police of a “cover-up” intended to suppress information the public has a right to know.
He said police feared that Nuneaton could see violent protests similar to those outside a migrant hotel in Epping, Essex, last month—after it emerged that an asylum seeker staying there had been accused of sexual assault, harassment, and inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity.
The source said: “They are covering it up because they don’t want to end up in a similar situation to Epping.”
But last night, Warwickshire Police defended its position, saying in a statement:
“Where relevant, sensitive information regarding the scene, details of the crime, and police activity to catch offenders may be shared—with a warning that this is sensitive or confidential information and that disclosure by those informed could affect future court hearings.”
