President Donald Trump shut down a backroom deal with Senate Democrats Saturday night, nuking hours of negotiations over his pending nominees.
Talks to confirm up to 60 of Trump’s picks collapsed after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) demanded over $1 billion in exchange for Democrat support.
“Tell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party, the Radical Left Lunatics, to GO TO HELL!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He said the demand was “egregious and unprecedented” and blasted it as “political extortion.”
Trump ordered GOP senators to walk away. “Do not accept the offer,” he said. “Go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are.”
The White House was closely monitoring the talks before Trump personally pulled the plug. “Have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he added.
Before the collapse, both sides thought they were close to a deal. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said there were “lots of offers” exchanged between him and Schumer, as Fox News reported.
“There were several different times where I think either or both sides maybe thought there was a deal in the end,” Thune said.
Democrats wanted the White House to unfreeze billions in foreign aid and NIH funding. They also demanded Trump agree to stop future clawback packages.
In return, they promised to confirm several of Trump’s non-controversial nominees. But Schumer kept increasing his price.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin said Democrats moved the goalposts repeatedly. “We’ve had three different deals since last night,” he said.
“And every time it’s been, every time it’s ‘I want more,’” Mullin added, accusing Schumer of bad faith.
He said Republicans weren’t surprised by Trump’s intervention and that the administration had been involved all along.
“You get to a realization that it was never about making a deal,” Mullin said. “They want to go out and say the President’s being unrealistic.”
Instead of a full deal, lawmakers managed to vote on only seven of Trump’s nominees before leaving Washington.
Republicans have ruled out recess appointments for now but are preparing a major response when they return in September.
Mullin confirmed that rule changes to the confirmation process will be on the table next month.
Democrats tried to blame Republicans for the breakdown. They argued that their offer was consistent while GOP demands kept expanding.
“The ask evolved on both sides quite a bit over time,” Thune admitted. “But in the end, we never got to a place where we had both sides agree to lock it in.”
