President Donald Trump isn’t exactly rushing to save former Rep. George Santos (D-NY).
During a Friday appearance on Newsmax, Trump was asked whether he would consider pardoning the disgraced former congressman now serving a seven-year sentence for fraud. His answer was blunt.
“He lied like hell, I have to tell you,” Trump said. “And I didn’t know him, but he was 100% for Trump. I might have met him, maybe, maybe not, I don’t know.”
Trump added, “Nobody has talked to me about it,” regarding the idea of a pardon. When host Rob Finnerty noted Santos’ prison time, Trump said, “It’s a long time.”
Santos, 37, pleaded guilty last year to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors said he fabricated $250,000 in donations to qualify for the GOP’s “Young Guns” program. He also stole from elderly donors and used their credit cards for Botox, OnlyFans, and designer clothes.
The fallout was massive. Santos became just the sixth member ever expelled from the House, in a bipartisan vote. But even as he heads to prison, he hasn’t stayed quiet.
He launched a podcast, “Pants on Fire,” and admitted he had quietly lobbied Trump for a pardon. By May, though, he said he dropped the idea. “I have seized that approach,” Santos said, describing the process as a waste of time.
Still, Trump seemed amused by Santos’ ability to lie. “You could blame the other side for not checking him out,” he said. “You could say the media misses. Everybody missed it.”
The former president was referring to Santos’ now-infamous fabrications. He lied about working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. He claimed to be a volleyball star at NYU—despite never attending. He even said his Jewish grandparents escaped Nazi Europe. In reality, they were born in Brazil.
Santos later tried to joke that he was “Jew-ish.”
Trump, while clearly not impressed, didn’t rule out a pardon completely. But he also didn’t offer any support. “It sounds like a lot,” Trump said of the sentence. “But he was a congressman and his vote was solid.”
Santos blamed much of the criminal conduct on his former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, who cut a plea deal and cooperated with authorities, per the New York Post.
Before heading to prison, Santos made several public appearances, including one with Tucker Carlson. He admitted he was afraid. “I’m not suicidal. I’m not depressed. I have no intentions of harming myself,” he wrote on X.
He also added, “I will not willingly engage in any sexual activity while I’m in there.”
Trump noted that Santos wasn’t the only person looking for a pardon. He said there have also been “a lot of people” pushing clemency for Sean “Diddy” Combs and even Ghislaine Maxwell.
