President Donald Trump said Friday he wants to release all government records related to Jeffrey Epstein but warned that innocent people could get hurt if files are made public too fast.
“I want to release everything,” Trump told Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty. “I just don’t want people to get hurt.”
He said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche recently interviewed Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell at a federal prison for nine hours, likely to assess the impact of making those files public.
“[Blanche] probably wanted to know, you know, just to get a feeling of it,” Trump said. “We’d like to release everything, but we don’t want people to get hurt that shouldn’t be hurt.”
Trump made clear he hasn’t spoken directly to Blanche about the interview and doesn’t know if transcripts will be released, as the New York Post reported.
He reiterated his broader stance: “Todd went in and I think he just wants to make sure that innocent people aren’t hurt.”
Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking but has been moved to a minimum-security facility in Texas. Trump said he hasn’t been approached about granting her clemency. “I’m allowed to do it, but nobody’s asked me to do it,” he said. “I know nothing about it. I don’t know anything about the case, but I know I have the right to do it.”
Epstein died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide, though skepticism about the circumstances persists.
Trump also addressed the possibility of a pardon for rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was convicted earlier this month on two counts of prostitution. He was acquitted on more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Combs faces sentencing in October and could receive up to 20 years in prison.
When asked whether he would consider a pardon, Trump admitted he’s conflicted. “Probably – eh, you know, I was very friendly with him. I got along with him great, and seemed like a nice guy. I didn’t know him well,” he said.
“But when I ran for office he was very hostile,” Trump added. “It’s hard, you know, like, we’re human beings, and we don’t like to have things cloud our judgment, right? But when you knew someone and you were fine, and then you run for office, and he made some terrible statements – so, I don’t know, it’s more difficult.”
Trump acknowledged that he has been approached about a pardon for Combs. “They have talked to me about Sean,” he said.
When pressed by Finnerty if he was leaning toward a “no,” Trump replied: “I would say so.”
The statements come as the Trump administration faces mounting pressure to disclose Epstein-related files, which have long been kept sealed or heavily redacted. Trump’s comments suggest a willingness to move toward full transparency, though with caveats to avoid damaging uninvolved individuals.
