President Donald Trump on Friday ordered two of the nation’s nuclear submarines “positioned” in case the recent “words” from Russian officials are more than just that.
The dispute came about after Trump, frustrated with Russia’s intransigence on reaching a peace accord with Ukraine, which it invaded under the administration of Joe Biden, shortened a deadline for Russia to comply with a ceasefire.
That triggered a response from Dmitry Medvedev, former president of Russia, who threatened, “each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war.”
Trump responded, “Based on the highly provocative statements of the former president of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Reports confirmed that the submarines were dispatched to “regions near Russia.”
Trump, this week, shortened the time frame for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine to 10 days, “or be hit … with tariffs.”
Trump earlier advised Medvedev to “watch his words,” and he accused Trump of a “game of ultimatums.”
