President Donald Trump is spending $200 million on a White House ballroom, with construction starting in September of this year, and is expected to be finished before the end of Trump’s term.
According to a Thursday announcement by the Whtie House, the change to “The People’s House” will be a 90,000-square-foot golden-themed room for entertaining, as The Daily Mail reported.
It will also be the first structural change to the house since the addition of the Truman balcony in 1948.
This comes after months of Trump promising to add a ballroom, saying that the White House doesn’t have adequate space for the kind of events needed for heads of state.
From The White House
In the press release from the White House, the administration asserted that the presidential residence often has to use overflow rooms for guests or have a “large and unsightly tent” outside.
“The White House Ballroom will be substantially separated from the main building of the White House, but at the same time, its theme and architectural heritage will be almost identical,” the release stated.
“The site of the new ballroom will be where the small, heavily changed, and reconstructed East Wing currently sits.”
What To Expect
This won’t be a cheap proposition, with the price tag totaling an estimated $200 million; however, it will be funded by Trump and other private donors, according to recent reports.
There was no specific completion date for the project given by the White House, but Americans were assured that it would be open, “long before the end of President Trump’s term.”
Future projections for the massive ballroom, however, show off an impressive room with gold light fixtures, Greek Corinthian columns, a coffered ceiling, and tall, arched windows.
According to an April report by The Wall Street Journal, the president has already booked the work of his “gold guy,” also known as cabinetmaker John Icart, to create golden borders for political portraits, as well as carvings for a fireplace, and a gold Trump crest for a doorway.
More Changes
The president is known for his unique style, on display at his very public homes in New York and Florida. Some of those choices have made their way to the Oval Office, with the addition of gilded additions to the iconic executive office.
However, not all of the changes made at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. have been viewed with appreciation, and the president had to defend his decision to pave a portion of the Rose Garden this March during an interview with Fox News anchor Lara Ingraham.
“You know, we use [the Rose Garden] for press conferences, and it doesn’t work because the people fall,” he said. “The terrain can be wet, and the soft ground can be an issue for some… Women, with the high heels, it just didn’t work.”
