A Miami mom is facing serious charges after her 2-year-old son allegedly got hold of her gun and accidentally shot himself in the leg while sitting in the backseat of her car.
According to police, 33-year-old Christina Doyle was backing into a parking spot at an apartment complex on Wednesday with her toddler and another relative in the backseat. That’s when she heard a sudden bang. When she turned around, she saw her son had taken a gun from her purse and shot himself in the right leg, the Miami Herald reported.
The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover. Doyle later went to the Miami Gardens police station, where she was arrested and charged with child neglect with great bodily harm and culpable negligence.
The child’s great-grandmother, Paula Campbell-Stone, called the shooting a tragic accident—and says she’s just thankful the injury wasn’t more severe.
“My feeling is that she has always been a good mother. She has always been good to her children,” Campbell-Stone told CBS News. “I was very upset and sad about it. I thank God that it was only his leg and he is on the mend at this time.”
She acknowledged that Doyle should’ve been more careful, but added that she likely didn’t think a toddler could actually fire the weapon.
“It was definitely an accident. There was nothing intentional about it,” she said. “I am sure she did not plan for any of this to happen. I do believe the charges may be a little too extreme.”
A judge has set Doyle’s bond at $5,000 and ordered that she may only have supervised visits with her injured son and her three other children while the Florida Department of Children and Families conducts its investigation.
