Justin Timberlake is battling Lyme disease and may not finish his “Forget Tomorrow” world tour, the pop star revealed Friday.
The 43-year-old singer is currently hospitalized. He shared the news with fans in an emotional Instagram post, admitting the condition has been “relentlessly debilitating.”
Timberlake wrote, “Among other things, I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease – which I don’t say so you feel bad for me – but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes.”
Lyme disease is typically spread by infected tick bites and can cause severe fatigue, nerve pain, and flu-like symptoms. Timberlake said he had no idea how or when he was infected.
The singer explained that his symptoms had impacted his performances, describing moments of “massive nerve pain” and “crazy fatigue” while on stage.
He said the diagnosis at least explained the strange sensations he’d been feeling for weeks, as Trending Politics reported.
“Stop touring? Or keep going and figure it out,” Timberlake said. “I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going.”
Fans recently criticized Timberlake over a silent performance at Romania’s Electric Castle festival, where he appeared to lip-sync and ask the crowd to clap along while no vocals came from his mic.
“When you pay for a concert but get a mute singer,” one fan complained on TikTok. “Dude took a day off on stage.”
Timberlake’s post now puts that performance in a new light. He said he initially hesitated to go public with the diagnosis but decided transparency was important.
“I was reluctant to talk about this because I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself. But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted.”
He thanked fans and his team for their patience and support during the tour, praising their dedication and energy despite the circumstances.
“To everyone of you who came to see me… Your energy and love continues to humble me,” he wrote. “Hearing and watching you all sing these songs… will forever leave me in awe.”
“To my crew, band, singers, and dancers… Tour life really is like nothing else,” Timberlake added. “You all have been such a beautiful family away from home for me. I will always treasure our time these last couple of years together.”
While the future of Timberlake’s tour remains uncertain, the singer said he is proud of what they accomplished.
“There really is no way to put into words the feeling of being on a stage… It’s a vibration of frequency that is unmatched,” he said. “I honestly don’t know what my future is onstage but I’ll always cherish this run!”
He closed the message saying the tour had been “the stuff of legend” for him.
