Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was recently rushed to a hospital in Washington, D.C., following a sudden medical emergency. The news quickly drew attention, with President Donald Trump’s top advisor being taken by ambulance amid concerns for her health.

Kristi Noem hospitalized 

According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, “Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction. She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. She is alert and recovering.” CNN reported at the time there was a heavy Secret Service presence outside the hospital she was admitted to. While the assistant secretary admitted that Noem is on the mend, it is unclear what caused her reaction.

Donald Trump’s response

President Donald Trump shared a statement following the news of Noem’s hospitalization. “My dear friend @Sec_Noem, our fearless Secretary of Homeland Security, was just rushed to the hospital. My heart is with her during this challenging time, but I know her strength and determination will shine through.” He continued, urging the public to keep Noem in their prayers for a full recovery. “Please join me in keeping Kristi in your prayers for a swift and full recovery. She has been tirelessly spearheading @realDonaldTrump initiative to uphold law and order and utilize ICE to keep our country safe from criminals. Let’s stand strong for her, just as she’s stood strong for America.”

Kristi Noem’s political history

President Trump has praised Noem as a key member of his cabinet, but her rise to prominence began well before her time in his administration. Before joining his team, Noem made history as South Dakota’s 33rd Governor and its first female governor. She was re-elected in 2022 with the largest reported vote total in the state’s history. Her political career began in the South Dakota legislature, and she later served as the state’s sole representative in the U.S. House before rising to national prominence.

ICE operations

Since assuming her role at DHS, Noem has taken a firm stance on immigration enforcement. She has overseen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, emphasizing accountability after years of claimed inaction under the Joe Biden administration. “For the past four years, our brave men and women of ICE were barred from doing their jobs — ICE needs a culture of accountability that it has been starved of under the Biden Administration,” she said at the time. Under her leadership, ICE raids have increased, with many operations filmed and generating public debate. Noem defends these actions as necessary enforcement of the law, telling CBS News, “It’s not a spectacle. … This is our nation’s law enforcement — judicial process. The scales of justice are equally applied to everybody. We want transparency on this. I believe that this is an accountability measure.”
