In the two years since Indiana became the first state in the nation to pass an abortion ban after Dobbs, abortions have dropped 98%. That’s a good number of babies whose lives have been saved from certain death.
While many other states had unenforced abortion bans or trigger laws on the books ready to ban abortions once Roe v. Wade was overturned, Indiana immediately got legislation drafted and approved in the state legislature once Dobbs fell.
After the abortion industry took the law to court and courts finally defeated Planned Parenthood’s attempts to thwart the law from saving babies, the law was upheld.
“Two years ago today, Indiana’s law restricting most abortions in our state took effect,” says Indiana Right to Life executive director Mike Fichter.

Since then, abortions have dropped a whopping 98% — going from 7,702 in 2022, the year Roe was overturned, to just 138 today.
Although many abortion customers go to other states for abortions and some purchase the abortion pill online – not all do. Undoubtedly some babies are saved as women who would have considered abortion decide to have their babies instead.
And the pro-life movement continues fighting to ban abortions in more states and stop illegal sales of abortion pills by mail.
“Today, abortions remain at record lows in our state. Meanwhile, we continue to encourage a flourishing culture of life across Indiana with our Love Them Both campaign and our website, HelpMomsandBabies.org,” Fichter said.
He pointed out that the 138 figure is down from the all time high of abortions in 1984, when 16,505 babies were killed. That was an era with few state abortion limits and a decade after Roe – when abortions became normalized. With limits on abortions and massive education campaigns about how the baby before birth is a baby and abortions hurt women, pro-life groups in Indiana cut the abortion figures in half before Roe fell.
Now, Fichtger says pro-life groups are fighting to help pregnant women and to save babies before abortions happen in other states.
“Today would be a special day to head over to that site and make a gift to a pregnancy help organization near you! It’s a simple, meaningful way to continue to build the pro-life safety net in all of our communities,” he said. “Our mission is far from over, but today is a good day to pause and reflect on how God is at work, how far we have come, and to thank you for your faithful support in prayer, volunteering, financial support, and more.”
