WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Two men are behind bars following allegations of sexual abuse involving a seven-year-old girl, according to law enforcement officials. On Thursday, West Palm Beach police announced the arrests of Pablo Neftali Coban Mendez, 23, and Josue David Mendez Salas, 26.
The arrests were made public during a brief statement by the police chief, who described the acts as “heinous” but did not entertain questions from the media. The chief commended the officers and detectives for their diligent work under challenging circumstances.
The investigation began when the girl’s babysitter contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF) after the child reported inappropriate touching by two men. One of the accused is a family member, while the other is a roommate, according to police.
DCF conducted an initial inquiry before involving West Palm Beach police. Court documents reveal that both men confessed to assaulting the young girl on different occasions while intoxicated. The family member admitted to five incidents, claiming he ceased drinking to prevent further misconduct.
Further disturbing details emerged as Salas reportedly admitted to striking the child with a belt, resulting in visible bruising. Both individuals are now facing charges of sexual battery on a person under 12.
In court, the judge ruled that the suspects must have no contact with the victim or any other minors. Salas was ordered to be held without bond.
This case highlights the critical role of vigilant caregivers and thorough police work in addressing and preventing child abuse.
