A shadowy orange figure captured on surveillance footage near Jeffrey Epstein’s prison cell on the night of his death is reigniting doubts about the federal government’s official findings.
This is according to forensic video experts who analyzed the footage as part of a CBS News investigation.
The pixelated object, seen ascending a stairwell toward Epstein’s cell block at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York, appears on surveillance video at approximately 10:40 p.m. on August 9, 2019 — hours before the convicted sex offender was found dead by apparent suicide.
The federal government previously concluded that the orange object was a corrections officer carrying linens or inmate clothing. However, forensic analysts reviewing the video have raised questions about that explanation.
They have suggested the figure may have been a person in an inmate’s orange uniform.
Forensic video expert Conor McCourt, a retired NYPD sergeant, told CBS, “Based on the limited video, it’s more likely a person in an [orange] uniform.”
Epstein was 66 years old at the time of his death.
An official autopsy report ruled that he died by suicide through hanging.
A joint investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI later confirmed that conclusion. However, the findings have remained a topic of public controversy and speculation due to the high-profile nature of the case and the number of prominent figures associated with Epstein.
CBS News, which obtained and reviewed the surveillance video, reported that several forensic experts challenged the government’s version of events.
These experts pointed out that key areas of the jail, including the stairs leading to Epstein’s cell and the cell door itself, were not visible on the footage provided.
According to video forensic expert Jim Safford, “To say that there’s no way that someone could get to that, the stairs up to his room, without being seen is false.”
Safford’s analysis was echoed by four other forensic professionals consulted by the outlet.
The staircase leading to Epstein’s tier is mostly obscured in the footage.
In addition, the entrance to Epstein’s cell is outside the camera’s view entirely.
This contradicts the FBI’s earlier assertion that the surveillance cameras captured all comings and goings in the area.
Further complicating the issue, CBS reported that the footage in question was likely not raw surveillance video.
A cursor and menu bar were visible on the screen, suggesting that the video may have been recorded via screen capture.
Additionally, there was an abrupt one-minute jump forward in time just before midnight, and the video’s aspect ratio changed mid-recording.
These irregularities led the experts to question the completeness and authenticity of the surveillance evidence provided by federal authorities.
Despite these concerns, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has not changed its stance.
In a statement to CBS News, the OIG said, “Our comprehensive assessment of the circumstances over the weeks, days, and hours before Epstein’s death included the effects of the longstanding, chronic staffing crisis in the [Bureau of Prisons] and the BOP’s failure to provide and maintain quality camera coverage within its facilities.”
The statement continued, “As CBS notes, nothing in its analysis changed or modified the OIG’s conclusions or recommendations.”
WATCH:
Epstein had been awaiting trial on charges related to sex trafficking of minors.
His death came just weeks after he was arrested and denied bail.
The controversy surrounding his associates, alleged victims, and potential high-profile clients has remained a dominant aspect of public discourse since 2019.
Earlier this month, the DOJ released another update, reaffirming that there was no evidence Epstein had been murdered and asserting again that there was no secret “client list” uncovered in the investigation.
The announcement drew mixed reactions, particularly among those who have long questioned the official suicide determination.
