It’s not often that a Democrat governor admits failure—especially not in California, where left-wing ideology is treated like gospel. But this week, Gavin Newsom did something extraordinary: he repealed one of his own laws. Not because he suddenly found a conscience, but because the consequences had become too horrific to ignore, even for a man with presidential ambitions.
Let’s be clear about what happened. In 2022, Newsom signed SB 357, a bill pushed by radical State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), which decriminalized loitering for the purpose of prostitution. The left claimed it was about ending so-called discrimination against transgender individuals and sex workers. What it actually did was turn California’s streets—especially in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco—into open-air markets for human trafficking, including minors.
Don’t take my word for it. After the law went into effect, street prostitution exploded. We’re talking about children—yes, children—being trafficked in broad daylight. The police had their hands tied. They couldn’t even intervene unless a crime was in progress, and by the time they could act, it was often too late. This wasn’t just a policy failure—it was a moral collapse.
Now, just three years later, Newsom is trying to walk it back. On Wednesday, he signed AB 379, which restores misdemeanor penalties for loitering and finally introduces tougher penalties for soliciting sex from minors aged 16 or 17—something Democrats had repeatedly blocked in the past.
Let that sit for a moment: California Democrats, for years, refused to make it a felony to solicit sex from a 16-year-old. Why? Because they were more concerned with protecting perpetrators than victims. This is the same party that fought tooth and nail to prevent Republican State Senator Shannon Grove’s bill that would have classified child sex trafficking as a “serious felony” under California law. They blocked it. Repeatedly. Because to the progressive elite, crime is just “misunderstood behavior” and criminals are the real victims.
But now Gavin Newsom wants to be President.
So, he’s suddenly found religion on the issue. He’s flying to South Carolina, testing the waters in conservative states, trying to rebrand himself as a “reasonable” Democrat. And to do that, he needs to distance himself from the radical policies that have turned California into a dystopian nightmare.
This repeal isn’t leadership—it’s damage control.
As Newsom himself put it in a carefully-worded statement, AB 379 shows California is “again going on record to support survivors and victims of human trafficking.” Again? You mean after you gutted the very laws that once protected them?
It took a coalition of Republicans and a few moderate Democrats to push this change through. And let’s not forget: these so-called moderates are still part of a party that blocked stronger protections for children just last year. They only moved when the political cost became too high—when the images of trafficked girls on the streets of L.A. became too damaging to ignore.
This is the problem with the modern Left. They don’t govern with principles—they govern with polls. They don’t care about results—only optics. And they don’t reverse course because they’ve had a change of heart—they do it because their ambitions demand it.
Gavin Newsom didn’t repeal this law because he cares about victims. He did it because he wants to be president. He saw that his own policies were indefensible on the national stage, and he needed a quick fix.
But here’s the truth: no last-minute reversal can erase the damage done. California’s streets are still dangerous. Traffickers are still exploiting loopholes. And the Democrats who enabled it are still in power, still pushing the same broken ideology.
If you want real change, you don’t just tinker with bad laws—you replace the people who pass them. That’s what 2025 is about. That’s why conservatives must stay vigilant, stay informed, and never forget who created this crisis in the first place.
Gavin Newsom can sign all the bills he wants. But he can’t outrun the truth.
