From a 25-hour faux filibuster to a made-for-tv fracas at an ICE facility in New Jersey, there seems to be no limit to the over-the-top dramatics in which Democrats will engage to protest President Donald Trump, his agenda, and his allies in Congress.
Among the latest examples of such excesses was a scene that broke out last week in Wisconsin, where, as Fox News reports, a group of protestors delivered a makeshift coffin and funeral flowers to the home of House Administration Committee chair Bryan Steil (R-WI).
Bizarre spectacle unfolds
In what can only be described as a strangely macabre demonstration, a group of protestors clad in black clothing marched up the lawmaker’s driveway, clanging cowbells in a mock funeral procession.
Once they made their way up the private path, they deposited the cardboard casket, complete with somber epitaph.
“HERE LIE THE HOPES OF THE MOST VULNERABLE KILLED BY THE ‘BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL’ SIGNED INTO LAW BY PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP AND ENDORSED BY LYIN’ BRYAN STEIL,” the taped-on message stated.
The final line of the coffin’s inscription read, “RIP Democracy. 1776-2025.”
According to Fox News, the incident was subsequently reported to the U.S. Capitol Police for further investigation, and it remained unclear whether any of the participants will face criminal charges for their involvement.
Organizers discuss, defend tactic
The so-called “Death of Democracy” stunt, organized by the Southern Wisconsin Grassroots Network and Working Families Party was orchestrated so as to avoid excessive police scrutiny of those who took part.
One of those behind the protest was overheard on a Facebook Live discussion during the event saying, “We’re not going to hang out here because we’re not going to invite the police to come and ask questions, and say, ‘What are you doing here, blah, blah, blah.”
The organizer added, “We’re just going to get out of town.”
Ravi Mangla, serving as national press secretary for the Working Families Power group defended the spectacle, stating, “17 million Americans are going to lose life-saving medical care because of Bryan Steil’s vote.”
Mangla added, “Frankly, that’s a far scarier thing than a group of seniors holding some taped together cardboard.”
Steil weighs in
Steil, who was first elected to Congress in 2018 and currently chairs the key House panel on Administration, weighed in on the incident, stating, “It’s disappointing that Democrat leadership and the radical left resort to these types of tactics. I remain committed to my work to get this country back on track and will not be deterred by their threats.”
The protestors behind the faux funeral procession are urging like-minded individuals to stage protests at a town hall meeting Steil will host on Thursday, but whether anything quite as theatrical as what occurred at the congressman’s home is on tap, only time will tell.
