(NewsNation) — Hulk Hogan, legendary World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler and Hall of Famer, died of a heart attack caused by a form of leukemia, according to a medical examiner’s report.
Dated July 30, the report cites acute myocardial infarction as Hogan’s cause of death. The report notes the heart attack was a consequence of atrial fibrillation and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL. There had been no previous reporting confirming Hogan had cancer.
CLL is a slow-progressing cancer that can be treated, but it affects the immune system and can make it more difficult to recover from other infections, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The wrestling star died at the age of 71 on July 24. Authorities in Clearwater, Florida, said first responders responded to a medical call just before 10 a.m. local time for reports of a cardiac arrest. Hogan, born Terry Bollea, was treated by medical and fire crews before being taken to a local hospital, authorities said, where he was pronounced dead.
Hogan won a WWE heavyweight championship six times during his pro wrestling career and gained popularity during the 1980s. The 6-foot-7, 320-pound wrestler became infamous for his bright yellow wrestling tights and his “Real American” theme music.
In the weeks that have followed his passing, tributes honoring the wrestler have come from fellow wrestlers, celebrities and even President Donald Trump.
