A violent mob attack outside a Cincinnati nightclub has left a man and a woman hospitalized with serious injuries and prompted national outrage, as graphic video of the incident spread rapidly online.
Cincinnati Police Chief Terri Theetge said the incident, which occurred downtown, may have been fueled in part by excessive alcohol consumption.
Theetge addressed the media at a Monday press conference, confirming that five individuals have been charged so far, with the potential for more arrests as the investigation unfolds.
“All potential charges are being investigated for everyone involved,” Theetge said.
“All investigative tools and techniques are on the table, including, were some of these people overserved at some local establishments? It is clear to us that alcohol played a part, a significant part in this incident.”
One of the individuals arrested, 34-year-old Montianez Merriweather, was taken into custody on Tuesday.
Police say Merriweather appears in the video footage that shows multiple individuals attacking a man and a woman outside the club.
The video, which has gone viral, shows the victims being beaten by a group of individuals as bystanders recorded and applauded the assault.
Merriweather faces charges of felonious assault and aggravated riot.
He has a criminal record that includes indictments on charges such as receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm while under disability and improper transportation of a firearm.
He was already known to law enforcement prior to this most recent arrest.
Another individual, 24-year-old Dekyra Vernon, has also been charged with felonious assault and aggravated riot.
Authorities have not disclosed the full extent of her alleged involvement in the incident but confirmed she was identified as a participant through the video evidence, according to Post Millennial reporting.
The video captured a disturbing scene in which the male victim is seen being struck and kicked repeatedly while on the ground.
The female victim is shown unconscious and bleeding from the mouth, lying motionless on the pavement as the crowd continues to shout and record.
Both victims sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment, according to police.
Officials have not released their names but confirmed that they are in stable condition as of the latest reports.
Law enforcement is continuing to review additional footage to identify more individuals involved in the assault.
Theetge acknowledged the public’s concern about the behavior of bystanders who were present during the attack.
Many were seen cheering, recording video with their phones and encouraging the violence rather than attempting to intervene or assist the victims.
While the police department has not confirmed if any bystanders will be charged, the chief stated that “this behavior is unacceptable and deeply troubling.”
The incident has drawn national attention and sparked a response from Vice President JD Vance, who previously served as a senator representing Ohio.
Vance condemned the violence and emphasized the need for accountability.
“I haven’t seen the full context, but what I saw is a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person,” Vance said in a statement.
“Where I come from at least, when you have a grown man who sucker-punches a middle-aged woman, that person ought to go to jail for a very long time.”
