Video of an absolute beatdown in Cincinnati began circulating on social media Saturday night. The original video showed an older white man getting chased down and jumped by a bunch of younger black people. Then, towards the end of the video, a white lady tried to stop the fight and got knocked out.
The outcry was swift. With so many upset about the apparent lack of police response and racial tensions flaring, Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge, who is currently being sued for discrimination against white male officers, blamed social media “for not giving the full context” while refusing to give said context when asked.
Then, a video claiming to show the beginning of the altercation began circulating. This video showed the victim as the aggressor, slapping a man in a red shirt before others attacked him in response.
Four days later, news finally broke that five people had been arrested in connection with the street fight. Using several news reports from the local media, which obtained information from hearings for three of the five arrested individuals, we gain a clearer picture of what happened that night.
Three of the suspects have been publicly identified. The red shirt guy is Jermaine Matthews. Montez Merriwether was wearing a black t-shirt with a circular design on it that night. The third suspect is a woman, Dekyra Vernon, who was wearing a cheetah print outfit that night.
