TRACY, CA – Danielle Shackelford and her 14-year-old daughter, Emma, were enjoying a carefree moment, listening to My Chemical Romance as they prepared to merge onto the 580 freeway. In an instant, their world turned upside down.
Danielle described hearing a sound like an explosion. Her immediate concern was for Emma, seated next to her. To her horror, she discovered a metal tire rim had crashed through the windshield, landing on Emma.
Despite the chaos, Danielle managed to pull the car over and call for help. Emergency services from Alameda and San Joaquin counties responded swiftly, with Emma being rushed to the hospital.
The days that followed were a blur for Danielle and her family. Emma endured severe injuries, including a fractured skull and internal bleeding, as she was treated at San Joaquin General and UC Davis Medical Center.
“It felt unreal,” Danielle recalled. “Like a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.” She remained by Emma’s side, sleepless, for 40 hours, ready to assist her daughter at any moment.
Amidst the ordeal, a special delivery from the Tracy Fire Department lifted Emma’s spirits. Now back in Fresno, Emma reflects on her gratitude for her mother’s constant presence.
“I’m just happy that part of my life is behind me,” Emma said, her resilience shining through. She even envisions a “survival party” to commemorate her recovery, complete with humorous touches like a cake decorated with an eyeball and a scar.
Emma hopes to eventually attend a concert with her mom, the person who never left her side during the darkest times.
