New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani said that he would “disband” an elite NYPD task force that responded to Monday’s mass shooting at the Blackstone building, where a deranged gunman killed four people, including a police officer.
The radical left Democrat assemblyman, who is currently running away with the race, pledged to break up the Strategic Response Group (SRG), a special operations division of the NYPD that is deployed in certain situations, including shootings and bank robberies.
In a December 2024 post to X that has resurfaced after the shooting incident, the likely next mayor of Gotham vowed to get rid of the SRG.
Today the NYPD deployed the Strategic Response Group (SRG) to harass + arrest striking @teamsters.
As Mayor, I will disband the SRG, which has cost taxpayers millions in lawsuit settlements + brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their first amendment rights.

“As Mayor, I will disband the SRG, which has cost taxpayers millions in lawsuit settlements + brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their First Amendment rights,” Mamdani said.
“Strategic Response Group responds to citywide mobilizations, civil disorders, and major events with highly trained personnel and specialized equipment. They are also deployed to areas requiring an increased police presence due to increased crime or other conditions,” according to the NYPD’s website.
“With multiple missions that include disorder response, crime suppression, and crowd control, SRG has proven to be a critical asset during events like parades, protests, and the papal visit. SRG also mobilizes for shootings, bank robberies, missing persons, demonstrations, or other significant incidents,” the website states.
In the aftermath of shooter Shane Tamura’s deadly rampage, during which he also killed himself, Mamdani expressed gratitude to the first responders who once again put their lives on the line while carrying out their duty.
I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts.
Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground. https://t.co/ixEeqnPdD5

“I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown, and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts. Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground,” he said in a post to X, a stark contrast to his anti-police rhetoric, including the pledge to do away with the SRG.
The charismatic 33-year-old Ugandan-born Muslim scored a shocking victory in June’s Democratic primary, beating out disgraced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a result that sent shockwaves throughout the political system and showed that the allure of socialism remains very strong with the party’s base. Among his campaign promises were government-run grocery stores, rent freezes, free busing and childcare, and the building of hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units.
He has also called for defunding the police in resurfaced social media posts from 2020 during the violent national race riots that erupted after the death of career criminal and drug addict George Floyd, who perished while resisting arrest in Minneapolis.
“No, we want to defund the police,” he wrote in a June 8, 2020, post to Twitter, since rebranded as X.
“We don’t need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety. What we need is to #DefundTheNYPD. But your deal with [New York City mayor] uses budget tricks to keep as many cops as possible on the beat. NO to fake cuts – defund the police,” he said in a June 28, 2020, post.

Mamdani, who has been branded as a “communist lunatic” by President Donald J. Trump, is blowing away the competition according to a recent poll that suggests that he will easily win November’s election, a catastrophic scenario for Gotham.

Already endorsed by Democrat rock star and 2028 presidential frontrunner Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and socialist cadaver Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Mamdani’s chances of setting up shop at City Hall are growing, greatly aided by Cuomo’s refusal to drop out of the race to not split the opposition vote.
“New Yorkers need to seriously ponder who their next mayor will be. They need to think long and hard about potentially electing an unabashed anti-cop candidate in Zohran Mamdani,” New York State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar warned, according to the New York Post.
“If Mr. Mamdani were elected, he would have direct control over the NYPD – an agency he publicly despises,” he added. “That cannot work in a city like New York.”
