President Donald Trump threw tact out the window and said that London Mayor Sadiq Khan is a “nasty person” who is doing a “terrible job” while he was sitting right next to the Prime Minister of the U.K., Keir Starmer.
Trump made the comments when he was asked by a London-based reporter in Turnberry, Scotland on Monday during a joint press conference with Starmer whether he would visit London.
“I’m not a fan of your mayor. I think he’s done a terrible job, the mayor of London. [He] is a nasty person,” Trump said. “I think he’s done a terrible job, but I would certainly visit London, yeah,” Trump continued.
Starmer interrupted Trump to say that Khan was “a friend of mine, actually,” and laughed, but let Trump continue his insults of the mayor.
The feud
Khan, a Muslim, compared Trump to “the fascists of the 20th century” during Trump’s first term in 2019 when Trump visited the U.K.
Trump responded by calling Khan a “stone cold loser” and criticizing the way he was handling problems in the city.
Khan also spoke out after Trump was elected in 2024:
The lesson of today is that progress is not inevitable. But asserting our progressive values is more important than ever — re-committing to building a world where racism and hatred is rejected, the fundamental rights of women and girls are upheld, and where we continue to tackle the crisis of climate change head on.
But a spokesperson for Khan welcomed Trump’s visit after the press conference, saying, “Sadiq is delighted that president Trump wants to come to the greatest city in the world. He’d see how our diversity makes us stronger, not weaker; richer, not poorer.”
“Perhaps these are the reasons why a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship under his presidency,” the spoksperson added.
Scotland visit a success
Trump is wrapping up his Scotland visit during which protesters made their dislike of him clear.
He spent part of one day celebrating the opening of a golf course in Turnberry in honor of his mother, and playing a round of golf there.
He also wrapped up a tariff deal with the EU that has been regarded as a success for him.
Most goods imported to the U.S. from EU countries will now have to pay 15% tariffs, down from the 30% previously threatened by Trump.
On the U.S. side, no concessions were made.
