The Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday advanced a major housing package in a unanimous vote, aiming to expand grant and loan programs for homebuyers and to dramatically overhaul guidelines related to rentals and landlords.
The panel advanced the Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream to Housing Act of 2025 in a 24-0 vote, Politico reported. Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., cosponsored the plan.
“There are new programs here that should operate more directly with the states and local communities so that we’re not at the mercy of a stripped down HUD. But I worry about HUD being under resourced to meet its current obligations, much less to take on more,” Warren told the outlet.
It remains unclear when the legislation will reach the floor for a chamber-wide vote and if it has the support to reach President Donald Trump’s desk.
