This past April saw Prince William and Kate Middleton as well as their four children head off to France for a ski trip in the Alps.
However, a royal travel policy could force the prince and his family to split up the next time that they go on vacation overseas. Â
Royal family’s travel arrangements are governed under “morbid rule”
According to Fox News, that fact is due to something called the “morbid rule,” under which 12-year-old Prince George must travel separately from his father.
Royal family expert Richard Fitzwilliams explained the protocol’s rationale to Fox News, saying, “The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children are the future of the royal family.”
“Accidents do happen, and this seems like a sensible precaution which ought to be observed, as it was with King Charles and William during Queen Elizabeth’s reign,” he continued.
“There are reports that the king and William, who is a pilot, disagree over this,” the royal family expert went on to acknowledge.
“But it should be necessary to point out that Harry is fifth in line to the throne… and only four working royals are under 70… The need for Prince George as second in line to the throne to fly separately from his father surely makes sense,” he stressed.
Former royal pilot says William traveled separately from his father
Graham Laurie formerly served as pilot to King Charles, and he said during an appearance on “A Right Royal Podcast” that the king initially flew with his sons William and Harry along with the late Princess Diana.
Yet the aircraft pilot explained that this arrangement immediately changed as soon as William reached his son’s current age.
“After that, he had to have a separate aircraft, and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty,” US Weekly quoted Laurie as stating.
“When William became 12, he would fly normally in a 125 from Northolt, and we would fly the 146 out with the other three on,” he asserted.
Some observers question whether William will follow rule
Yet Marie Claire noted in an article published this past weekend how some observers are skeptical that Prince William will adhere to the rule.
They include Rebecca English, who serves as the Daily Mail‘s royal editor. She said, “I get the impression that the family won’t be changing their travel arrangements at all.”
English, who claimed to have recently spoken with Buckingham Palace, added, “They were like, ‘Well, it’s kind of news to us.'”
