A heartbreaking case out of the U.K. has taken a major turn, as a mother has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her 2-year-old daughter, who was found unresponsive in a nearby pond.
On Monday, July 28, 42-year-old Alice Mackey admitted to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in the death of her daughter, Annabel. The plea was entered at Winchester Crown Court, nearly two years after the toddler’s tragic death in the quiet Hampshire village of Oakhanger.
Police say the incident began around 5 p.m. on September 10, 2023, when reports came in that Annabel had gone missing from her home. A frantic search ended shortly after when the little girl was discovered unresponsive in Kingsley Pond, about 350 yards away. She was rushed to the hospital but died the following afternoon.
Authorities launched a full investigation, led by the Major Crime Team, focusing on Annabel’s movements leading up to the discovery at the pond. In March 2025, Mackey was officially charged with murder. On Monday, she formally entered her guilty plea to a reduced charge and remains in custody ahead of her next court appearance set for October 6.
Annabel’s father shared a touching tribute earlier this year, remembering her as a joyful soul full of kindness.
“Annabel was a beautiful, positive and very happy little girl,” he said. “She had an incredibly pure and caring nature that we miss so much. She loved story time, dogs, and her dolly. She enjoyed singing songs and had a very sweet tooth.”
He added, “Annabel loved to laugh. She brought so much happiness into our lives. She was dearly loved by her family and friends. Please continue Annabel’s legacy by remembering her and caring for others as much as she did.”
“The world needs more people like Annabel to spread positivity and kindness. Annabel, I love you so much. You are a shining star and you will be loved forever.”
Police have not released further details about Mackey’s mental health status or the circumstances that led to the plea. The court has not yet issued a sentencing date, pending the October hearing.
The case continues to shake the local community, where many are still struggling to make sense of the tragic loss.
