A gunman killed four people in a Midtown Manhattan office tower July 28 before taking his own life, leaving behind a suicide note that blamed the National Football League (NFL) for his deteriorating mental health, New York officials said July 29.
Authorities identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas. In a July 29 interview with CBS, New York Mayor Eric Adams said Tamura intended to target the NFL’s headquarters but entered the wrong elevator bank. Tamura then opened fire inside Rudin Management, a real estate firm in the same tower.
A three-page note found in Tamura’s wallet referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma, often from contact sports. CTE has been linked to aggression, impulsive behavior, suicidal thoughts, and dementia.
One line read, “CTE study my brain please. I’m sorry,” according to NBC News. In another passage, Tamura accused the NFL of concealing the risks of brain injuries to “maximize profits.”
Adams said Tamura “appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury.”
Tamura had played high school football in California, NBC News confirmed, but never played in the NFL. In an X post, police noted he had a documented history of mental illness.
The NFL has faced mounting scrutiny over its handling of head injuries for years. It has paid roughly $1 billion in concussion-related settlements to former players, particularly after several high-profile athletes were diagnosed with CTE following their deaths.
The shooting victims included off-duty New York Police Department officer Didarul Islam, 36; an executive at Blackstone Wesley LePatner; and two other individuals who have not been publicly identified. An NFL employee was wounded but is in stable condition.
President Donald Trump responded to the shooting July 29 in a social media post.
“I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence,” he wrote. “My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Adams said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine Tamura’s motive.
This is a developing story subject to updates.
