Sen. Josh Hawley is proposing a bill that would put tariff money back in the hands of the people who need it most.
A new bill aims to put $600 in the hands of millions of Americans, cementing an idea that President Donald Trump had voiced his support for days earlier. This would be a blow to the Democrat talking points that knock tariffs as being a policy that will negatively affect the wallets of middle- to low-income people.
In a statement, Hawley recalled the economic nightmare that occurred under former President Joe Biden and suggested that Americans deserve a financial break from the hardships they are facing.
“Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families’ savings and livelihoods. Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country,” he said.
“The United States now has record monthly tariff revenue, which nearly reached $30 billion in June. Several projections suggest the United States could see over $150 billion in tariff revenue in 2025 alone,” the statement explained.
The legislation, dubbed The American Worker Rebate Act, would have several benefits:
- Provide a tariff rebate check this year to American workers and families with similar parameters to the direct payments passed by Congress in 2020.
- Ensure the amount of the rebate is at least $600 per adult and dependent child (e.g. $2,400 for a family of four).
- Allow for a larger credit per person if tariff revenue exceeds current projections for 2025.
The New York Post reported that “[m]arried couples who file taxes jointly and make more than $150,000 per year combined, heads of households who make more than $112,500 per year and individuals earning more than $75,000 per year will see their rebates reduced by 5%.”
“Tariff revenue has topped $113 billion so far in fiscal year 2025, and the US posted a budget surplus for June as tariff revenue soared to $27 billion,” the article added.
X users reacted to the bill, with many suggesting alternative ways for the money to benefit the United States:
This would be a good time to end income tax.

I don’t want them to throw me a few hundred, I want prices and cost of living to go down so we can all save thousands every year.

Politicians just can’t help themselves. They gotta spend taxpayer money. Pay off debt and deficit like any prudent middle class household would do.
