The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has long been the right hand of the climate crisis, and the Obama administration made more strides than many in causing substantive change.
Now, however, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has announced his intention to repeal the emissions findings that were called the “holy grail of the climate change religion,” as Fox News reported.
That one finding is responsible for an estimated $1 trillion in regulations and has led to higher energy costs for the past decade.
The policy in question was the 2009 Endangerment Finding, and Zeldin promised to “end sixteen years of uncertainty for automakers and American consumers” with “the largest deregulatory announcement in US history.”
From The EPA Chief
During his speech on July 29 at an Indianapolis auto dealership, Zeldin said that, “In our work so far, many stakeholders have told me that the Obama and Biden EPAs twisted the law, ignored precedent, and warped science to achieve their preferred ends and stick American families with hundreds of billions of dollars in hidden taxes every single year.
“With this proposal, the Trump EPA is proposing to end sixteen years of uncertainty for automakers and American consumers,” he said.
Zeldin went on to say that his agency has “heard loud and clear the concern that EPA’s GHG emissions standards themselves, not carbon dioxide,” that is “the real threat to Americans’ livelihoods.”
The former Long Island congressman said that if the order removal should result in deregulation that would save $1 trillion in hidden taxes on American businesses and families.
Immediate Changes
Under the Obama era order, the EPA decided that carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride emissions were a problem.
Specifically, the emissions of the above-stated substances that came from cars were deemed a threat to “public health and welfare of current and future generations.”
Zeldin’s change scraps the finding as bad science and allows regulations from both the Obama and Biden administrations that controlled vehicle emissions to be trashed.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright also weighed in, saying, “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, America is returning to free and open dialogue around climate and energy policy – driving the focus back to following the data.”
