New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mandani recently lamented the death of a police officer and three others in a Midtown Manhattan mass shooting.
Yet in a humiliating development, previous anti-law enforcement remarks by Mandani have led critics to question his sincerity. Â
Mandani wrote in 2020 that “queer liberation means defund the police”
According to Fox News, the candidate issued a statement lamenting the killings which were allegedly carried out by Las Vegas resident Shane Tamura.
“I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts. Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground,” Mamdani wrote in a social media post on Monday evening.
However, some social media users brought up a post which Mamdani put up five years ago which read, “Queer liberation means defund the police.”

What’s more, Mamdani put up another post the following month in which he lashed out at New York City’s police department.
Democratic candidate suggested that prisons should be done away with
“In the last budget, the City Council tried to make the NYPD reduce its overtime budget by half. They simply refused,” he lamented.
“There is no negotiating with an institution this wicked [and] corrupt,” he continued before adding, “Defund it. Dismantle it. End the cycle of violence.”
Meanwhile, Fox News recalled how Mamdani suggested that prison should be abolished during an interview in 2020, asking, “What purpose do they serve?”
However, the news network observed how the Democratic nominee has since softened his stance when it comes to slamming law enforcement.
Mamdani now promises not to defund the police, says they have a “critical role”
“I will not defund the police,” he said in a primary debate which featured current Mayor Eric Adams and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“I will work with the police because I believe the police have a critical role to play in public service, public safety,” Mamdani added.
Mamdani’s campaign website also calls for the creation of a new Department of Public Safety which he says will help police officers to do “their actual jobs” through “prioritizing solutions which have been consistently shown to improve safety.”
“Through this new city agency and whole-of-government approach, community safety will be prioritized like never before in NYC,” it asserts.
