MIDLAND, TX – A community is coming together to remember the life of 15-year-old McKayla Fortner, who tragically lost her life earlier this summer in a dog attack. Her family is preparing a heartfelt celebration to honor her memory this weekend.
McKayla, affectionately known as MK, was a vibrant teenager with a passion for sports and a love for animals. Her mother, Stephanie Wilkie, and godmother, Sabrina Stout, described her as a smart, talented, and athletic young girl who brought joy to those around her.
In the months leading up to the tragedy, McKayla and her mother were involved in rescuing and caring for a litter of puppies in their neighborhood. Their goal was to find loving homes for the puppies through a local rescue organization.
On June 11, while caring for the last of the puppies, McKayla was attacked by other dogs on the property. The devastating news reached Stephanie in a phone call she describes as the worst of her life. “I just remember screaming at the top of my lungs,” she recalled.
In the wake of the incident, McKayla’s family is advocating for stronger animal control measures outside city limits. They hope to introduce legislation named “McKayla’s Law,” aimed at preventing similar tragedies in areas lacking adequate animal control plans.
The upcoming celebration of life will feature many of McKayla’s favorite things. Friends and family will gather to share stories, listen to music, and release balloons in her honor. The event will take place at the Midland Soccer Complex, inviting all who knew her to attend.
As the community reflects on McKayla’s impact, her legacy may also live on through potential legislative changes, ensuring safer environments for both people and animals.
The Sling County Sheriff’s Office is involved in the ongoing investigation of the case.
