Chelsea Green, a WWE superstar and frequent on-screen personality, announced Friday night that she was stepping away from social media following widespread criticism over comments she made regarding the late Hulk Hogan.
Green’s remarks came shortly after the news broke that Hogan had died on Thursday.
The 70-year-old wrestling legend reportedly suffered a cardiac event at his home in Florida.
WWE and the broader professional wrestling community responded quickly with tributes honoring Hogan’s decades-long career.
During an appearance on CBS News’ 24/7 streaming program, Green was asked to reflect on Hogan’s legacy.
She described Hogan as an “absolute icon” in the sport, while also acknowledging that he held “polarizing political views.”
Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, was one of the most recognizable figures in professional wrestling.
He was a multiple-time world champion, main-evented some of WWE’s biggest shows, and became a household name during the 1980s and 1990s.
His catchphrases, theme music and larger-than-life persona helped popularize the industry worldwide. However, Hogan’s reputation was damaged by controversies in his personal life.
In 2015, leaked audio surfaced in which Hogan made racially charged remarks.
As a result, WWE terminated its contract with Hogan, and he was removed from the Hall of Fame section of the company’s website.
He was later reinstated in 2018, but the incident left a lasting impact on his legacy.
Hogan also became known for his political views, which included vocal support for Donald Trump.
During the 2024 presidential election, Hogan backed Trump’s re-election campaign, further fueling his polarizing image among fans and commentators.
Green’s attempt to pay tribute to Hogan drew backlash from a portion of the online community.
Some fans accused her of being dismissive of Hogan’s past controversies by calling him an “icon” without sufficiently condemning his earlier remarks.
The backlash intensified on social media platforms, particularly on X, where Green has a large following.
In an initial post following the criticism, Green addressed the controversy directly and issued an apology.
She wrote that part of her job at WWE includes responding to questions on live platforms and that she was asked to comment on Hogan during a live television segment.
“A significant part of my role at @WWE involves engaging w the public & responding to questions, often on live platforms,” she posted.
“Yesterday, I was asked to comment on Hulk Hogan on live tv. Let me be clear: my stance on racism is unwavering. I do not condone it—period.”
She continued by stating that her intention was never to appear dismissive of valid concerns, especially those involving issues of race.
“If my response (or tweet) seemed dismissive of real concerns, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention. I tried to acknowledge a death respectfully, even when the legacy is complicated. I am learning one day at a time and will continue to learn,” she said.
Despite the clarification, the Fox News outlined that Green continued to receive negative messages and threats online.
In a follow-up post, she revealed the emotional toll the situation had taken and announced that she would be stepping away from social media altogether.
“I’ve tried to keep my page positive and comedic, but today, a lot changed… and it hit harder than I expected. The name calling, the death threats, the faceless accounts,” Green wrote.
“Social media was supposed to be a fun place and it hasn’t been for a while. It’s been overwhelming and I need to step away for a little bit,” she added.
Green has become one of the most visible female personalities in WWE, known for her in-ring performances and comedic timing.
She frequently uses social media to engage with fans, share behind-the-scenes content, and promote WWE events.
Her sudden absence has been noted by fans and colleagues alike.
WWE did not release a formal statement regarding Green’s comments or her decision to leave social media. However, the company’s tribute to Hogan continued as planned.
On “Friday Night SmackDown,” WWE aired a video montage celebrating Hogan’s most memorable moments, followed by a 10-bell salute in his honor.
