Texas lawmakers put on a show last week when the topic of redistricting caused mayhem and frustration, as Breitbart News reported.
The special session, called by Gov. Greg Abbott, dissolved into an event where Democrat hopeful Isaiah Martin, 27, of Houston, had to be escorted out of the building because he wouldn’t yield the floor.
The candidate for Houston’s 18th Congressional District had some serious skin in this particular game, though, as his is a district that could change substantially if redistricting takes effect in Texas.
Martin was asked multiple times to yield the floor, but he continued his speech, accusing Republicans of making an illegal change at the behest of President Donald Trump.
The candidate’s problem
Martin was irate during his testimony, going so far as to challenge the legitimacy of the hearing altogether.
“It just seems as if many are just sitting here going with their motions, and it makes sense because the game is rigged,” he said of his fellow Democrats.
As to Republicans, he accused the majority party of gerrymandering, “”You gotta get Trump’s endorsement. That’s the name of the game to be a Republican nowadays. Trump told every single one of you that he needs five seats. … But the real conversation we should be having … is that there will be a retaliation for that.”
The candidate’s scene
Footage from the hearing shows that Martin collapsed when he was pulled from the room by authorities after refusing to adhere to the rules.
“History will NOT remember you for what you have DONE! It is a shame!” he yelled.
The theatrical performance caused gasps from the crowd, and the would-be lawmaker seemed to make his mark on all those present.
He was also, however, charged with resisting arrest, criminal trespass, and disrupting a public meeting.
What happened next
The Houstonian was released from the Travis County Jail the next day, and all charges seemed to have been dropped.
He then later crafted a narrative around the events of the meeting in his post to X, saying, “The Republican Party threw me in jail because I had the audacity to speak up.”
He conveniently left out the portion of the hearing where speaking time and decorum were explained, and he asserted that he was being treated unfairly because of his political positions.
