Let’s be clear: being a “nice guy” doesn’t exempt you from the law. That’s not how a nation functions. That’s not how sovereignty works. And that’s certainly not how justice is supposed to be upheld in the United States of America.
So when the media—like Newsweek—decides to run a soft-focus, emotional puff piece on an illegal immigrant detained by ICE, we need to cut through the sentimental fog and deal with the facts. Here’s what actually happened: Darwin Contreras, a 27-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a court appearance related to a DUI. He also has prior convictions for theft and drug possession. And yes, he openly admitted to authorities that he is in this country illegally.
Now, the left wants you to forget all that. They want you to focus instead on the fact that Contreras once received a participation-style certificate from the Obama-era President’s Education Awards Program back in 2012. They want you to sympathize with his traumatic journey to the U.S., his hobbies in high school sports, and his marriage earlier this year. All of that is meant to distract you from one fundamental truth: he broke the law by entering and remaining in this country illegally—and then he broke the law again by committing crimes while here.
Let’s be honest. This is not about compassion. This is about whether America is still a nation of laws. President Trump’s administration is finally restoring order to an immigration system that was turned into a chaotic, lawless mess under Barack Obama. And that means enforcing immigration laws—even when it’s uncomfortable, even when the media cries foul, and even when the individual in question has a compelling personal story.
Here’s what the media won’t tell you: every illegal alien who remains in this country undermines our legal immigration system. Every exception carved out—based on emotion, not the law—sends a message to the millions still waiting in line: don’t bother following the rules. Just come in, lay low, and eventually the system will fold under political pressure.
But not in 2025. Not under President Trump.
As Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed, Contreras is a “criminal illegal alien” with a record. That alone justifies ICE’s action. The fact that he was detained after a court hearing is standard procedure. This is law enforcement doing its job. No one is being snatched off the street at random—this was a lawful arrest following due process.
And let’s not gloss over the nature of his criminal record. Driving under the influence isn’t a minor infraction. It’s reckless, dangerous, and potentially deadly. Theft and drug possession aren’t just “youthful mistakes”—they’re crimes that degrade communities and endanger public safety.
Yet somehow, the media wants us to believe that because he got a certificate in middle school, he’s above the law?
This is the two-tiered justice system the left wants: one for Americans, another for illegal immigrants. If an American citizen with a DUI and a theft conviction showed up in court on a pending case, there would be no media sob story. But because Contreras is in this country illegally—and because he fits the narrative the progressive media wants to push—he becomes a martyr.
We shouldn’t fall for it. Conservatives understand that compassion and law enforcement can coexist—but not when compassion is used as a weapon to dismantle our sovereignty. We have a moral obligation to secure our borders, enforce our laws, and protect American citizens first.
Contreras’ story may be emotional, but it doesn’t change the facts. He entered the country illegally. He committed crimes while here. And now, under a president who takes border security seriously, he’s finally being held accountable.
That’s not cruelty. That’s justice. And it’s long overdue.
