Hawley Introduces Legislation to Send $600 Tariff Rebate Checks to Americans

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley on Monday introduced legislation that would send at least $600 to every American adult and child in the form of a tariff rebate check that is similar to pandemic-era stimulus checks.

Hawley co-authored the legislation creating COVID-19 pandemic stimulus checks in 2020, alongside Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, which provided Americans with up to $1,200 to help with financial hardships created by the pandemic. The new bill echoes the stimulus legislation.

The move comes after President Donald Trump told reporters last week he would be interested in sending Americans tariff-related rebate checks, though he did not indicate how much those would be.

“Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country,” Hawley said in a statement obtained by NBC News.

The legislation would send $600 to adult Americans and dependent children who make less than $75,000 a year for individuals, $112,000 a year for head of households, and $150,000 for joint filers. The rebate check for those who make more than that would be reduced by 5%.

The bill also allows for larger rebates per person if tariff revenue exceeds current projections.

Hawley’s bill will still need to pass both chambers of Congress and could face difficulty in the House, after Speaker Mike Johnson rejected an effort earlier this year to create a Department of Government Efficiency dividend check.
