Tragedy at Residential Standby
Around 3:30 p.m. on July 26, 2025, law enforcement responded to a civil standby at a home on South 30th Street after a woman requested help due to threats from an armed man inside. Deputy Elijah Ming and a Kansas City, Kansas police officer arrived shortly after 3:45 p.m. As they approached the front door, the man inside began firing. Ming was struck and later died in hospital despite efforts to save him.
Multiple officers returned fire while attempting to render aid. After about an hour-long negotiation, the suspect—38-year-old Shawn Harris—exited the home and was taken into custody. He had sustained injuries during the exchange but is now reported to be in good condition.

Community Shock and Investigation
Deputy Ming served nearly nine years with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office and was remembered by colleagues and officials as a dedicated and caring officer. Sheriff Daniel Soptic urged residents to pray for Ming’s family and the law enforcement community. Kansas City, Kansas Mayor Tyrone Garner called it one of the hardest days in his tenure.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of the officer‐involved shooting probe. Their pending findings will be submitted to the Wyandotte County District Attorney for possible charges. In the meantime, both the victim and suspect’s families await answers as the investigation continues.
