Vanderbilt University on Friday confirmed it is investigating the video published by Townhall, which appears to show a staff member describing an intentional effort to conceal its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and events in a bid to avoid federal scrutiny under the Trump administration, while simultaneously disparaging U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).
Asked by The Tennessee Star to comment on the video on Friday, the university directed The Star to a public statement published Thursday, revealing the independent law firm, Baker Donelson, was retained by the university to “conduct an independent review” of the incident.
“Baker Donelson will be tasked with reviewing the specific circumstances related to the recordings and identifying steps the university can take to ensure all employees fully understand the university’s policies and consistently act in accordance,” stated the university, alongside a pledge to “review the findings and recommendations of the report and take any appropriate follow-up actions.”
Vanderbilt also said the staff depicted, “will step back from regular responsibilities to allow the review to unfold.”
A video, posted by Townhall to the social media platform X on Wednesday, appeared to show Peabody Facilities Manager Janet Roberts describing Blackburn as “ridiculous” while explaining the university is now “flying under the radar” when it comes to DEI.
“We have this one, gosh I think she’s a representative, I heard that she may run for governor, and I’m going, oh God help us,” Roberts appeared to say.
The staff member also acknowledged that the university is “heavily supported by federal funding” and stated DEI events are now limited to those that are “student-led” and not technically supported by the university.
“We’re flying under the radar, I mean, honestly,” said Roberts.
