SCOTTSBORO, AL – A mother and daughter in Scottsboro are counting their blessings after narrowly escaping a harrowing police chase and shootout that unfolded right before their eyes, leading to a tense 20-hour manhunt.
Ali Holder and her daughter Malia decided on a whim to grab a late-night snack, a choice that placed them at the heart of a chaotic scene they will never forget. As they sat in their car outside a Taco Bell on Highway 72, the tranquility of their evening was shattered.
“I just relied on my instincts to protect her,” Ali recalled, her voice still tinged with the adrenaline of those petrifying moments. Their attention was drawn to a maroon Mustang speeding past, pursued by police vehicles. The Mustang collided violently with a Ford Expedition, flipping multiple times.
“The sound of gunshots was relentless,” Ali explained. “I had to act fast.” She quickly reversed their car, maneuvering through the drive-thru to find safety behind the building, away from the line of fire. Her daughter, Malia, remained her focus throughout the ordeal.
In the midst of the chaos, Ali couldn’t help but gaze at her daughter, fearing it might be the last time. “I couldn’t get enough of looking at her,” she admitted, visibly shaken by the memory.
Despite the terror of the experience, both mother and daughter emerged unscathed. “We’re just grateful to be alive,” Ali said, reflecting on the ordeal. “I’m thankful we’re here, even though it’s hard to comprehend what happened.”
The suspect in the chase, identified as Daniel Victor McCart, was apprehended after a nearly day-long manhunt. He now faces charges of attempted murder, among other offenses.
The Scottsboro community remains on edge, but the Holders’ story is a testament to resilience and the instinctual drive to protect loved ones, even in the direst circumstances.
