(NewsNation) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will hold a news conference at the migrant detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” on Friday.
According to a press release obtained by local media, DeSantis will be joined by Florida’s:
- AG Commissioner Wilton Simpson
- Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia
- State Board of Immigration Enforcement Executive Director Larry
- Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie
NewsNation will stream the 9 a.m. EDT event from this story when it begins. It’s unclear what the Florida officials will discuss.
The facility, built within days with the ability to hold thousands of people, opened earlier this month.
So far, the state has signed at least $245 million in contracts to open and operate it, according to publicly available state data.
President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other administration officials toured the Everglades center on July 1, praising it as a good use of the abandoned Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in the Big Cypress National Preserve.
But activists for immigrant rights and environmental issues have decried the facility and its location, deeming it dangerous for the folks housed there and the surrounding environment.
