Democratic Gov. Tony Evers announced Thursday that he will not seek a third term as governor, ending weeks of speculation about his political future and opening the door to a blistering Democratic primary for governor.
Evers released a pre-recorded video on social media.
Evers was first elected in November 2018 after beating the incumbent, former Republican Gov. Scott Walker, 49.6% to 48.5%. In 2022, Evers won reelection, defeating Republican Tim Michels 51.2% to 47.8%.
Evers had said for weeks he would make his reelection decision after the state budget process was complete. The governor signed the state budget into law just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday, July 3, to secure more federal Medicaid dollars by signing the budget before President Donald Trump signed his federal tax and spending plan into law.
The budget included a major compromise with Republicans on issues ranging from tax cuts to special education and child care funding, along with an increase for the Universities of Wisconsin.
