The U.S. State Department sharply criticised the European Union’s handling of online speech, calling its approach “Orwellian” in a social media post, and asserting that Brussels is actively curbing free expression.
On X, the DoS stated on Tuesday, July 22nd, that “in Europe, thousands are being convicted for the crime of criticizing their own governments” and accused the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) of shielding European politicians from public criticism.
“This Orwellian message won’t fool the United States,” the message added, declaring that “censorship is not freedom.”
This comment marks a strong escalation in U.S. rhetoric. It mirrors previous warnings from U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who earlier described the DSA’s content moderation rules as a threat to American-style freedom of speech.
Under the DSA, internet platforms are required to remove illegal content such as hate speech more swiftly and may face penalties if they fail to comply. Similarly to the Republican administration in the U.S., right-wing politicians in Europe have voiced their concerns about the DSA, which, they say intends to suppress legitimate political discourse.
