President Donald Trump is seemingly losing touch with young voters, as his approval rating among Gen Z has hit one of its lowest points yet. Knewz.com has learned that Trump’s standing with young voters has fallen dramatically in just one month. According to a YouGov/Yahoo News poll conducted between June 26 and June 30, his net approval rating among Gen Z voters plunged from -23 points in May to -41 in June. His overall approval among this age group dropped to just 27%, reflecting one of his weakest showings yet.
Trump Sees Sharp Decline in Gen Z Support

Once seen as making significant gains with young voters during the 2024 election, Trump is now experiencing a sharp reversal, as multiple polls conducted throughout June indicate a steep drop in his approval ratings among voters aged 18 to 29. In addition to the YouGov/Yahoo News poll, the Quantus Insights survey, conducted between June 30 and July 2, found that only 35% of Gen Z voters approved of Trump’s performance, while 58% disapproved. This represents a sharp drop from June, when approval stood at 46% and disapproval at 51%. Similarly, the ActiVote poll reported a drop from near parity in May (47% approve / 48% disapprove) to a clear negative trend in June (32% approve / 62% disapprove). “These numbers suggest that whatever modest inroads Trump made with younger voters in 2024 may be eroding as Gen Z voters grow frustrated with his agenda and messaging,” reports have mentioned.
Disapproval of Trump’s Handling of Key Issues

The results from several polls indicate that Trump’s declining approval is not limited to his overall image but is also tied to how young voters perceive his handling of key issues. In the YouGov/Economist poll from late June, Trump’s overall Gen Z approval dropped from 34% to 28%, with disapproval climbing to 66%. On the economy, the drop was smaller but still negative. Approval slid from 33% to 32%, while disapproval rose from 54% to 60%. Inflation, a top concern for younger Americans, showed the steepest shift: Trump’s approval fell from 32% to 23%, and disapproval surged from 57% to 69%. Immigration, another central topic in Trump’s platform, also saw erosion. Gen Z approval on that issue dropped from 40% to 30%, while disapproval climbed to 65% by the end of June.
Trump Seemingly Losing Ground with Young Voters

President Trump’s 2024 campaign was notable for narrowing the Democratic advantage with young voters. According to AP VoteCast, voters aged 18 to 29 supported Kamala Harris over Trump by a margin of just 51% to 47%, a far cry from the 25-point lead Joe Biden enjoyed in the 2020 presidential election. However, the situation seems to be reversing itself, as Trump is seemingly losing ground among Gen Z voters. Lucas Walsh, a youth political behavior expert and professor at Monash University, theorized that although many young voters backed Trump in 2024, his “dizzying array of announcements across contentious issues” since then could be pushing them away. Walsh further pointed out that in times of economic decline, younger people often bear the brunt of financial instability more than older voters. This heightened vulnerability makes them particularly responsive to issues that impact their personal finances. “These younger voters often care less about red and blue party lines and more about issues, particularly progressive ones, and issues affecting the bottom line of their day-to-day lives,” he added.
Overall Gen Z Outlook Shifts Towards Collective Pessimism

According to reports, the polls show that the overall mood among young voters seems to be shifting towards collective pessimism. In May, 27% of young voters believed the U.S. was on the right track. That optimism dropped to 21% in June, while those saying the country was headed in the wrong direction jumped from 53% to 66%, per the data from the YouGov/Yahoo poll. However, the decline in support for Trump doesn’t appear to be benefiting Democrats. Findings from the Quantus poll show that 43% of Gen Z voters believe neither major political party represents American values.
